Surely, as a pro-lifer, you have considered adoption. What pro-lifer hasn’t? But have you ever consider to adopt an abortionist?
The “Godfather” of the pro-life movement, Joseph Scheidler, recommends we pro-lifers do so in his great book, Closed: 99 Ways to Stop Abortion. For his 38th suggestion he suggests we each adopt an abortionist (pgs 166-68).
Scheidler reminds us that despite their murderous acts, and their clear violations of the ethics of their own profession, abortionists are people too. In fact, he reminds us too that abortionists are still open to redemption.
Though abortionists who convert to become pro-life are rare to find, a few do respond to that miracle of grace. He points to the (now-late) Dr. Bernard Nathanson, a famous convert. Dr. Nathanson performed and oversaw 10,000’s of abortions in New York City, while running an abortion chain.
Scheidler relays that Dr. Nathanson wrote in his book, Aborting America that many abortionists suffer personal conflicts on account of their involvement with the practice of child murder. Dr. Nathanson reports nightmares, drinking, drugs, and divorce as all-too-common side effects to this demonic line of work. The abortionists’ consciences are never at peace, so they need to drown out the bullhorn going off inside. You can be there to help them to stop running from their conscience.
A more recent example of an abortionist converting is Dr. Anthony Levatino. Dr. Levatino even played a role in the smash-hit movie, Unplanned.
ACTIONS TO TAKE TO ADOPT AN ABORTIONIST
The following are actions you can take starting today to adopt an abortionist. Not only will you perhaps help save a lot of babies from death, should he (or she) quit, but you just might save his (or her) soul, as well.
> Pick an abortion, preferably someone local to you.
> Pray for his conversion each and every day.
> Make personal sacrifices for the abortionist’s conversion (added by me).
> Write him polite letters to let him know you care about him and want to help him.
> Call him up, if you can, to try to talk to him.
> Visit him in person, and be friendly to him.
> Find out where he lives, so you can try to visit him there.
> Mail him pro-life literature, preferably to his home.
> Add him to pro-life mailing lists.
> Try to get his email address and add him to pro-life email lists (added by me).
> Send him information to keep him updated on relevant legislation.
> Send him medical information on the dangers of abortion for his female patients.
> Try to get to know his family to see if someone dear to him can help persuade him to quit.
> Find out if he has a church affiliation.
> Find out what memberships he has to professional organizations or clubs
> Do not hesitate to discuss the medical, moral, legal, ethical and religious ramifications of his profession with him.
> Take him out for coffee or for dinner, if he is willing.
> Befriend him!
You may think there is no way an abortionist would do that, but Scheidler says you might be surprised. “It should be a genuine invitation,” he encourages. “Pro-lifers may be surprised to discover that the abortionist may actually welcome the opportunity to try to justify his position on abortion and will take the invitation seriously” (emphasis added).
After citing multiple examples of this adoption method working in the pro-life ministry, Scheidler implores us to consider doing this. We need not even limit this adoption technique to just the abortionists themselves, either. If you know of a staunch pro-life activist or politician, this could be the means to bring about their conversion too. Our pro-life author and hero has this encouragement to leave you with:
“Consider the effect it would have on abortion in America if every abortionist were ‘adopted’ by an informed, pro-life activist who made every effort to engage him in conversation, and even befriend him, at his club, his clinic, his church. Think of the potential for good if every pro-lifer… were to decide to ‘adopt’ an abortionist—be it a doctor, counselor, clinic owner, pro-abortion columnist, legislator, or judge. We recommend that you adopt an abortionist right now” (emphasis added).
