Have you given much thought to how evil abortion really is? Did you ever consider how it violates each of the different Ten Commandments?
I will attempt to give you a brief explanation as to how the murder of the preborn breaks each of the different Ten Commandments.
As well, there are two lists contained within Scripture, but there are not different Ten Commandments. They are all the same commandments, but the two lists group them a bit differently. I will be following the ordering and numbering of Exodus 20. The list of the different Ten Commandments listed in Deuteronomy 5 remains just as valid, obviously, being the inspired, inerrant Word of God.
1. “THOU SHALL HAVE NO GODS BEFORE ME” (Ex 20:3)
Of all the different Ten Commandments, this one was given first because it remains the most important. Yet, abortion violates this command from God.
For example, abortion procurers are asserting their will over and above God’s. They are not allowing Him to be the Lord of their life.
As well, God as the author and giver of life is rejected by abortion seekers and providers. Rather than recognize God as the supreme being to whom we all owe our lives to, these people attempt to usurp His power by deciding who gets to live or die.
2. “THOU SHALL NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD IN VAIN” (Ex 20:7)
Think of the groups who claim to be Christians, yet they also claim to be “pro-choice.” They think they can support the extermination of the unborn and invoke the name of God in their advocacy. This is scandalous and God will not be mocked.
3. “REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY, TO KEEP IT HOLY” (Ex 20:8)
Of all the different Ten Commandments, this might be the hardest to connect to abortion. Yet, I will propose the following: the purpose of observing the Sabbath remains to set aside a day to spend with God, first and foremost. We are to thank Him for the gift of our lives and for the many blessings He bestows on us, including our families and children.
Abortion, on the other hand, deliberates rejects the gift of life and the blessing of children. In place of thanking God in humble submission and gratitude, abortion supporters reject the need to be thankful.
4. “HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER” (Ex 20:12).
This remains a unique component of the different Ten Commandments. Here God commands us to pay homage to our parents. God is, by extension, showing us the importance of our origin and the need we have to be obedient. Beyond that God is also showing us the importance of family. Obviously, procuring an abortion wrecks any family God is trying to build.
5. “THOU SHALL NOT KILL” (Ex. 20:13)
This one should be so obviously it need not an explanation. But I will provide one anyway.
We know abortion kills a living human being. For this it remains intrinsically evil and can never, under any circumstances be justified. We know the preborn is human because the preborn came from human parents. We also know the preborn is alive because he or she is growing inside the womb. Taking the life of an innocent human being who did no evil to anyone is not our right. It is killing. It is murder.
6. “YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY” (Ex 20:14)
The most obvious example of this commandment being violated in connection to abortion can be seen in those who use abortion to cover up adulterous affairs. Louisville men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino paid for the murder of his own love child in an attempt to cover up his affair against his wife, for example. NBA player JJ Redick drew up an “abortion contract” to pay his girlfriend $25,000 if she would agree to abort his child she was carrying.
7. “YOU SHALL NOT STEAL” (Ex 20:15)
Of the different Ten Commandments, this one is easy to see being broken by the procuring of an abortion. Many examples can be given, but let me point out the innocence being robbed of the adolescent and teenage girls who are forced to get an abortion.
A great multitude of young people these days are caught up in the promiscuous lifestyle. This results in physical repercussions, sometimes lasting a lifetime. As well, emotional damage and spiritual peril go hand-in-hand, as well.
8. “YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS AGAINST YOUR NEIGHBOR” (Ex 20:16)
What cannot be denied in this day and age remains the humanity of the unborn. Given the ultrasound technology and the amount of information available these days, I would argue no one is without excuse. And so what does it take to still procure an abortion an end the life of an unborn child?
Lies. People need to lie to themselves that killing children somehow serves a greater good. They even lie to the children being murdered, saying to those children they would be better off dead.
9. “YOU SHALL COVET… YOUR NEIGHBOR’S WIFE” (Ex. 20:17)
What was said for the Sixth Commandment can apply here. As well, this commandment places a boundary on what one can claim to possess. A mother—of all people—should respect the sacredness of the life she carries within her womb. She does not have dominion over that child to decide if he or she gets to live.
Yet, abortion advocates tell women the right to their body is so absolute that a child cannot get in the way. If a child is unwanted, then the child becomes expendable in this mindset of selfishness.
10. “YOU SHALL NOT COVET… ANYTHING THAT IS YOUR NEIGHBOR’S” (Ex 20:17)
What are we told by the advocates for abortion? Among many things, we are told women need to be able to abort, since childbearing and rearing would prohibit them. The argument is children stand in the way of a supposed bright future ahead of each woman. And many of the women who procure abortions buy into this, as well.
Covetness or envy seems to be at work here. There appears a supposed freedom that comes from being without the responsibility of caring for children. Abortion providers and advocates basically are asking women to break the Tenth Commandment by coveting what they don’t have.
