You pro-lifers are too obsessed with fighting against abortion. You care too much about the definition of marriage.
If you listen to the highest leader of the free world, you may recall such sentiments recently uttered.
But it that possible? Can someone be too obsessed with fighting against abortion?
Is it time to let up, and maybe even throw in the towel?
WHAT’S AT STAKE
Human lives are stake in this cultural battle over abortion. The US alone murders over 3,500 babies a day in surgical abortions.
Unborn human beings pay the price for those who deem their lives unworthy of protection. Innocent babies’ fates are tied to the whims of their parents and politicians.
The stakes could not be any higher than life or death.
POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II WEIGHED IN ON THIS QUESTION
Pope Saint John Paul II once addressed this question head on. In celebration of fifteen years as the pope, he issued a statement in 1994, titled Crossing the Threshold of Hope. Here, the late Polish pontiff answered whether person can be too fanatical about fighting the holocaust of the unborn.
First, Pope Saint John Paul II lays out the problem with abortion, as he sees it.
“The legalization of the termination of pregnancy is none other than the authorization given to an adult, with the approval of an established law, to take the lives of children yet unborn and thus incapable of defending themselves.”
The late Holy Father followed that up by immediately stating, “It is difficult to imagine a more unjust situation, and it is very difficult to speak of obsession in a matter such as this, where we are dealing with a fundamental imperative of every good conscience – the defense of the right to life of an innocent and defenseless human being.”
So, all you diehard pro-lifers out there, take heart in that. Pope Saint John Paul the Great has your back. He knows where you are coming from in your hatred for the deliberate destruction of the unborn.
POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II REITERATES HIS POINT
Later in Crossing the Threshold of Hope, the former-Bishop-of-Krakow-turned-Bishop-of-Rome doubles down. Can a pope even be too obsessed with the fighting against abortion? Pope Saint John Paul II answers.
“Therefore, I must repeat that I categorically reject every accusation or suspicion concerning the Pope’s alleged ‘obsession’ with this issue. We are dealing with a problem of tremendous importance, in which all of us must show the utmost responsibility and vigilance.
“We cannot afford forms of permissiveness that would lead directly to the trampling of human rights, and also to the complete destruction of values which are fundamental not only for the lives of individuals and families but for society itself” (emphasis added).
This latter pope got it. Do his words not put a little wind in your sails?
IN CLOSING
