Comedian George Carlin on abortion was just like all his other jokes: over the top, and crude.
He was a popular, ultra-liberal, professional joke teller. While still alive, he also made a serious charge against the pro-life movement. His quote gets repeated to this day. Carlin claimed the pro-lifers were nothing more than “pro-baby.”
His infamous quote is as follows:
“Boy, these conservatives are something, aren’t they? They’re all in favor of the unborn. They will do anything for the unborn. But once you’re born, you’re on your own.
“Pro-life conservatives are obsessed with the fetus from conception to nine months. After that, they don’t want to know about you. They don’t want to hear from you. No nothing. No neonatal care, no day care, no head start, no school lunch, no food stamps, no welfare, no nothing. If you’re preborn, you’re fine; if you’re preschool, you’re f—-d.”
If you have been in the pro-life movement for very long, likely you have had this charge leveled against you.
So, how do you respond?
At the end, please let me know what else you would say in your reply to this charge.
For now, here are my three answers to this charge.
1. “NO NOTHING?” GET REAL
Carlin and folks like him pretend as though pro-lifers care nothing about children, except to see them born.
If he is looking for care and concerns for our fellow man, especially children, he must be wearing blinders. That has to be the only way he does not see the charitable work of pro-lifers. Since the majority of the pro-life movement is comprised of Christians, I will point to them as the counter to his empty claim.
Last I checked, the Catholic Church, for instance, has numerous hospitals across the country. One in 20 hospital beds are at a Catholic hospital.
Do not forget Christians run thousands of schools in this country as well, led by the Catholic Church.
While you are at it, can you find me the phone number to your local food kitchen being run by atheists?
The fact is, conservatives give a lot of their time, talent, and financial aid to those in need. Don’t tell me pro-lifers don’t care about people once they are born.
2. APPARENTLY, YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A CRISIS PREGNANCY CENTER
Crisis pregnancy centers offer numerous resources to pregnant mothers in need. They offer financial assistance, supplies for the baby, job placement help, virtue training sometimes, and referrals for places to live, if needed.
In other words, run largely by conservatives, the 4,000+ crisis pregnancy centers try to help a woman (and her baby) overcome the circumstances they are in. They try to empower the women to get out of the situation that led them there.
Contrast that to the approach of the abortion-pushing crowd. They offer the same “solution” to every single situation a mother, in an unplanned pregnancy, could find herself in. Their answer, every time, is to kill the baby.
You know, that way the woman will have a dead baby to go along with no paycheck. We should all know by now killing the unborn baby only covers up the rape or the incest the woman may be suffering through. When’s the last time Planned Parenthood helped one of its clients find a job or to leave her abusive boyfriend? Killing the child solves nothing.
While we are at it, I find it hypocritical of the pro-abortion crowd who oppose crisis pregnancy centers. They want to say they are “pro-choice.” So what is the harm in showing each pregnant mother in need all her options? If abortion is so wonderful, wouldn’t women choose it freely, even when offered alternatives?
3. YOU MUST BE IGNORANT OF MATERNITY HOMES
Imagine a 17-year-old girl who becomes pregnant but wants to keep her baby. She may even be making this “choice” despite her boyfriend, parents, and friends’ advice. Her parents may even kick her out of the house, embarrassed by her. Where should this girl turn?
The abortion-pushers do not seem to have an answer.
Who would want to keep a baby, let alone as a high-school-aged girl?
Those who deem the dismemberment of the unborn as the solution to all women have nothing to offer this girl.
However, those “religious zealots” do have a solution for that mother. Mothers who need help during pregnancy and there afterwards are welcome to stay at maternity homes across the country. The pro-aborts just turn a blind eye to this, in their charge of pro-lifers just being only “pro-baby.”
IN CLOSING
George Carlin on abortion? Yeah, never very funny.
The tired charge gets old. The pro-aborts have run out of new material. They just keep rehashing the same lame arguments. At least they are consistent in that way. You have to give them that.
YOUR TURN
If you are pro-life, please tell me how you would answer the charge that you’re merely pro-baby.
If you have any other thoughts, please leave your charitable remarks below.
