I will give each idea, and then a short explanation why they would make for a beneficial sacrifice. I encourage you to try one, if not multiple, of these. So with no further ado, I present three things to fast from during Lent to help beat porn addiction.
Yes, I realize the requirements according to the current practice of Lent here in the USA are rather wimpy. We are called to abstain from meat only for the Fridays during Lent and Ash Wednesday. But that’s not going to do a whole lot for us spiritually. We ought to abstain much more often than that if we want to be seriously about overcoming our sinfulness.
By abstain from meat, we show God how serious we are in relying on Him for our strength. We swallow down more salads and greens. In so doing, we are fighting our fleshly, worldly desires. We are training our wills to overcome our bodily passions.
Believe it or not, giving up eating chicken, beef, etc. will help you overcome porn addiction. You will be growing in your ability to deny yourself sensual pleasures.
Consider giving up meat for all of Lent. Not only will it help you with defeating porn addiction, but it will help you curb our passions, as well.
You’re not the only one who enjoys a bowl of ice cream or a slice of pie after dinner. For Lent, I challenge you to cut all that out.
For many of the same reasons above, this will help you to say no to the temptation of looking at lustful images.
When you can say no to treats, you have trained yourself to forego such temporary pleasures. If you cannot say no to a chocolate chip cookie, it will be that much more difficult to resist impure temptations.
3. YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC
Here is one of the things to fast from during Lent you may not have thought of. But giving up your favorite music for 40 days can be very beneficial to your spiritual life.
For one, obviously listening is one of your senses. Being able to tell yourself no in this area is a beneficial step to recovery.
Skipping over your favorite stations and turning on classical music instead will help curb your appetites, as well. Learning to let reason dictate your actions, in place of your passions will help get the latter under control.
Listening to classical music, specifically, is also beneficial to your brain and helps you to control your emotions. These can only help you in recovery from porn addiction.
Or, you may opt to skip listening to music during Lent altogether. This would give you more time to pray and to meditate.
This would irritate the devil. For, he would just assume you crank up the music than to allow silence to fill the air. He doesn’t want you contemplating God’s ways. He’d rather keep you distracted humming to your favorite tunes. Whom will you serve every time you slip on your ear buds or turn on the radio: satan or God?
It may seem like a small, disconnected step to take, but it will help. Guaranteed.
One of the main objectives in practicing Lent is to grow in the virtue of temperance. Temperance is the means by which we moderate, or control, our desire for pleasure.
There is nothing intrinsically wrong with enjoying food and drink. However, tempering our desire for food and drink can do wonders for our spiritual wellbeing. Eating and drinking are sensual pleasures, just as the desire for sex. In keeping the former in check, we can help control the latter too.
In place of getting what you want, when you want it, you learn to let reason rule your desires.
As well, six weeks, or about 40 days, is a helpful timeframe to train yourself. This is because, as studies have shown, it takes about three weeks to learn a new habit. Here you get the first three-week set to learn to go without some sensual pleasure, like meat. And then you get the next three-week set to learn how to curtail the desire for meat. Hopefully that serves as a useful way to look at it.
Maybe God wills you to overcome your porn addiction completely by the time Easter comes. In case that does not happen, do not give up, but keep these pratices. Maybe rotate through them, or modify them to “punish your body” (a la Saint Paul, 1 Corinthians 9:27). In so doing, God will see to it you are the victor.
