I don’t know what else to call the recent phenomenon other than ‘transgender mania.’
Transgenderism has become trendy. It takes up more news air time, and has had more articles written about it than anytime in history. You would think it is all any liberal ever wants to talk about.
Yet, I can’t help but notice a logical disconnect by liberals as they hype up the supposed legitimacy of people being able to change their genders. Allow me to explain myself. I am looking at this transgender mania from a general, bird-in-the-sky type of view.
ON THE ONE HAND
At its root transgenderism gets its flawed philosophical grounding from Rene Descartes. He is the one who invented, or at least popularized the idea that a person’s identity is not tied to their physical body. Descartes made his arguments for this “dualism,” as it has been called, based on his supposed distrust of his senses. He could not trust the physical world. Therefore, all he could really, truly “know” to be true was the reality of his own existence. “I think, therefore I am,” serves as his most famous line.
Catastrophic philosophical problems have arisen from this flawed bit of reasoning. Instead of a human body serving as essential to the nature of the human person, Decartes saw the human body as merely an “accident” (not pertaining to its ‘essence’). What does this have to do with transgender mania? Everything.
Catholic Answers staff apologist explains it this way in an excellent article:
“Advocates of transgenderism argue that our sexed bodies have nothing to do with our personal identity, which is why they think it’s possible that a person’s identity as male or female doesn’t have to be in conformity with his or her biological sex. If a person thinks such disharmony exists, they argue, then he or she should be able to harmonize it by conforming to his or her desired identity.”
So, here we have the Leftists claiming the physical world, even human nature itself, remains distrustworthy. It is non-essential. It is malleable and dispensable. Okay, hold that thought.
ON THE OTHER HAND
Contrast that to the worldview that many liberals embrace called materialism. Materialists think that all we can know to be true is the material world, hence its name. Going further, they claim if we cannot see, smell, hear, taste, or touch it, then it must not exist.
In this flawed philosophy belief in God and in human beings having souls gets tossed aside. An afterlife, in this belief system, does not exist, since there is nothing to keep on living, once the human body dies.
Charles Darwin’s flawed teachings of evolutionary biology were clung to by materialists as an explanation for the world around us. As NewAdvent.org describes,
“The blind operation of natural forces and laws without spiritual agencies, was held to explain the origin of species and their purposiveness as well. Although Darwin himself was not a Materialist, his mechanical explanation of teleology brought water to the mill of Materialism, which recognizes only the mechanism of the atoms. This evolution of matter from the protozoon to man, announced from university chairs as the result of science, was eagerly taken up by the social democrats, and became the fundamental tenet of their conception of the world and of life.”
According to this modern, liberal world view, we are the result of some cosmic accident where our human existence and very nature are reduced to the mere physical world. We are nothing but atoms. We have no higher purpose for existence as humans than just to seek pleasure in this bleak, physical world.
SEE THE CONTRADICTION?
I find it hard to keep liberal thinking from making my head spin. As I see it, those who are embracing this transgender mania must be ignoring the materialistic explanation of the universe. I don’t see how else to explain their mode of thought.
After all, they argue a person’s existence rests outside their human body. This allows them to claim the human body is able to be changed and is not essentially to the identity of that human being. Yet, to do so, obviously, admits that each human person has a soul that exists in addition to the human body.
Yet, materialism argues that no human soul exists. The human body you start with is the one you are stuck with, so to speak. I guess those who embrace transgender mania as their latest cause for liberating victims from our shared human nature must reject materialism as the explanation for the physical universe.
For if transgenderism is true, and people can really “change” their gender, then liberals must admit there is a human soul animating the human body. But to do so would be to reject materialism as the explanation of the universe. It might even crack a window to the existence of God. Are liberals really willing to go there?
Am I understanding this correctly? If this is the case, then what are liberals to do? How do they reconcile these two incorrect philosophical explanations of the world around us? I am interested to know the answer.
do you make of the transgender mania? Do you see the contradictory worldviews of liberals colliding on this issue as I do? Feel free to share your thoughts on all this below. What
